A note relating Peale's “painter's quadrant": I found an advertisement in the 5/15/1805 issue of the Massachusetts Spy for "Polygraphic Art": a Mr. Weaver living on Broadway in NYC could multiply paintings through chemical and mechanical processes, he was apparently employed by the "Polygraphic Society" in London - sounds like a lithographic technique...an aside to look into?
